The World Cleanup Day 2026 national celebrations was held on 20th September, 2026 at Agricultural Training College (ATC) Grounds in Kisii County.
NEMA Director General Dr. Mamo B. Mamo, EBS and Board Member, Hon. MacLean Sitati representing NEMA Chairman, Emilio Mugo joined other dignitaries led by Governor Kisii County, H.E Simba Arati during the opening of the Etaya Governor’s Park formerly Nyambera dumpsite and a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) as part of the ongoing celebrations. Tree seedlings were also planted at the rehabilitated park.
The annual event is guided by the theme, ” From Clean Plates to Clean Cities” underpinning the clarion call to reduce organic waste that forms more than 60% of waste, compounding the challenge of waste management in most towns.
While speaking during the World Cleanup Day 2026 today at Kisii ATC grounds, NEMA Director General, Dr. Mamo B. Mamo, EBS has congratulated Kisii County Government for establishing a Material Recovery Facility that has transformed the County from linear to circular way of managing waste.
Dr. Mamo added that despite the country having robust legal framework on waste management, the challenge remains as most of the Citizens are not responsible for their own waste. He quoted Article 42 of the Constitution that guarantees the right to a clean and healthy environment for every citizen as well as responsibilities.
